the picture for a larger version This is the most common surgery done today. In this surgery, the surgeon makes a small pouch at the top of your stomach. This pouch is directly connected to the part of the small intestine called the Roux limb. This new small pouch limits how much food you can eat, and what you do eat bypasses three to five feet of intestine, reducing how much food your body absorbs. Usually, patients who have this surgery lose 50 to 75 percent of their extra weight. The surgery that is best for you is a decision made between you and your surgeon.
During lapband surgery, a band is put around your stomach to create less space for food. The amount of restriction can be adjusted by the surgeon after surgery by injecting saline into a small port that is placed just under the skin. Patients who have a lapband usually lose 40 to 50 percent of their extra weight. The surgery that is best for you is a decision made between you and your surgeon.
